Don’t lose sight of your eye health
As you slide on sunglasses this summer, what else are you doing to protect your vision? There are so many factors that impact our eye health — including age, genetics, screen time and more — and conversely, our eyes provide a look into our overall health.
The big story:
Nearly 5,000 employees are enrolled in Clorox’s vision plan through VSP, yet 77% of us don’t get an annual eye exam. The cost to you is only a $10 copay, but the benefits are priceless. What are you waiting for?
Just because your vision is good doesn’t mean you should skip your annual exam.
Here’s the truth about your eye health:
- An eye exam is a window into your overall health. Eye doctors can detect signs of chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and more. In fact, there are over 270 conditions and diseases an eye doctor can identify from a simple exam.[1]
- Most eye diseases have no early symptoms.[2] By the time you start to notice vision changes, the damage may be advanced or permanent. Here are the most common eye diseases — most of which can only be caught early through preventive exams:
- Vision loss is often preventable. Nearly 90% of workplace eye injuries can be prevented by wearing proper protective eyewear.[3] And more broadly, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 45% of people with vision impairment have an issue that could have been prevented or managed with a routine eye exam.[4]
- A little screen time goes a long way. As little as two hours of screen time per day can trigger symptoms like dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches — which can morph into more serious issues.[5] And, each additional hour of screen time can increase the chance of nearsightedness by 21%.[6]
- Stylish sunglasses may not cut it. Always choose sunglasses or protective lenses marked 100% UV protection or UV400. Tint doesn’t matter; UV protection does. For extra safety, use a wide‑brimmed hat — A 3-inch brim can cut UV exposure to your eyes, often by 50% or more (depending on conditions).[7]
