Telehealth vs. virtual care
You may hear these terms used interchangeably, but there are some key differences between the two. Here’s what you need to know:

*Please note: Not all doctors’ offices may offer telehealth services. If you’re traveling out of state, licensing restrictions may prohibit you from having a telehealth visit with your provider, and you may need to book a virtual care visit instead. Contact your doctor’s office for questions.

The care you choose should depend on your individual situation and level of urgency — not just cost and convenience.
- For life-threatening emergencies, visit your local Emergency Room (ER) or dial 911 immediately.
- For non-life-threatening emergencies like broken bones or allergic reactions, consider a local urgent care center.

Accessing virtual care through your medical plan
The steps to take depend on which medical plan you have:
The HSA (Partnership in Health) Plan through UnitedHealthcare (UHC)
- Visit myuhc.com and sign in to your account.
- From your dashboard, there are two ways to access virtual care:
- On the left-hand side, click “Virtual Care” under “My care team”; or
- Click “Find Care” in the top navigation, then click “Virtual Care.”
- On the left-hand side, click “Virtual Care” under “My care team”; or
- From there, choose from several types of virtual care—including primary care, 24/7 urgent care, mental health care, and specialty care.
- Once you choose the type of care you need, you’ll be prompted to choose your provider. For example, for primary care, you may choose to use Doctor On Demand or Galileo, and for specialty care, you can browse by specialty.
The PPO (Surest) Plan
- Visit benefits.surest.com and sign in to your account.
- On the home page, under “Common Searches,” click the “Virtual Visit” button.
- Once you choose the type of care you need, you may choose Doctor on Demand, Teladoc Health, AmWell, Galileo, and much more.
The Kaiser Plan (CA only)
- Visit kp.org/getcare.
- Choose your region: California – Northern or California – Southern.
- If you’ve chosen:
- California – Northern, select the primary symptom or concern you need care for. If virtual care is a good option to treat your concern, it will appear as an option for you to select.
- California – Southern, choose the type of care you need and follow the prompts.
- California – Northern, select the primary symptom or concern you need care for. If virtual care is a good option to treat your concern, it will appear as an option for you to select.
