September is Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month

Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in men in the United States[1] — nearly 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed during their lifetime.[2] And while that may seem scary, the good news is men who stay up to date with screenings are unlikely to die from it because chances are, an exam will catch it before it spreads. As a result, the five-year survival rate is 97.5%, making it one of the highest survival rates among all cancers.[3]

What are the risk factors?

While prostate cancer screening is generally recommended for men starting around age 50, you may need to start earlier if you have certain risk factors, especially if:

  • You have a family history of prostate cancer
  • You’re 65 or older
  • You are of African or Caribbean ancestry
  • You consume a significant amount of dairy

Remember—the best advocate for your heath is you! If you’re concerned about a symptom, speak up and get checked.

Ready. Set. Screen.

If it’s been a while since you’ve visited your primary care provider (PCP), it’s time to step up and schedule a check-up. And, if you don’t have a PCP, you owe it to yourself to find one. Click here for more about how to do so.

Even if you eat well, exercise regularly and have an overall healthy lifestyle, you may have something going on that you can’t see or feel. As just two examples, consider Ben Stiller and Al Roker, both of whom had no symptoms, yet caught prostate cancer early thanks to routine PSA tests and preventive exams. Their proactivity saved their life — and the same could be true for you.

Talk to your PCP at your next well visit to determine when the right time is for you to get a prostate cancer screening — or any other screenings that make sense based on your age, family history and lifestyle.

Remember — in-network annual preventive care is covered by all Clorox medical plans at no cost to you. Check out our Men’s Health Checklist for some important things to do as you prepare for your appointment.

Get rewarded for your health screenings

If you need even more of a push, remember the financial incentives we’ve made available to reward you and your loved ones when you prioritize your preventive care:

If you’ve enrolled in Critical Illness or Hospital Indemnity insurance through Securian, you and your spouse or partner (if covered) can each earn a $50 cash reward when you complete a routine medical exam, like a prostate cancer screening. If you have both of these supplemental health benefits, that’s $100 per eligible person in your pocket!

Earn 4,000 Personify Health points when you complete an annual physical, prostate cancer screening, colonoscopy or other health screening. Remember, you can earn up to $100 per quarter in Rewards Cash, which you can redeem for gift cards, donations and merchandise.
